Abstract

The microbial population as well as the sou enzymes activities was recorded In
four different ecosystems in Egypt with a wide nnge of heavy metal concentrations
The metal oncentrations were ranged between 126.22 to 3555.42 mg kg" dry sou
(As. Cd. Cr, Cu. Ni, Pb and Zn). The total rnicroblal population express as bacterial.
yeast and fungal counts, C02 evaluation. nitroqenase activity, soil enz. rnes acuvities
were determined
The results a out microbial biomass detected II at the counts were lower in
moderate and high polluted soils. The high reduction in the enzymes activities were
closely paralleled with the increase in the concentrations of heavy metals detected in
such soils. Also, the data obtained r veled that incre'asin') Ihe concentrations 0 f heavy metal In soils has a positive effecl on the growth anc activity of rmcroorqarusrr s as well iJS on Ihp 'role<, played on the organic matter decornposu.on and nu flcnl CjClinn In such site
